He has been defining himself as a researcher in communication systems and in visual arts since 1960, moving simultaneously in the worlds of art and design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A tireless experimenter, he has crossed different currents (from Informalism and Conceptual Art to Narrative Art and artist\u2019s cinema) and used multiple mediums, conducting research that were embodied in the theory of the \u201cDisequilibrating System\u201d \u2013 autonomous expression within Radical Design \u2013 and in important sociological themes such as \u201cThe Telematic Home\u201d (MoMA, New York, 1972 \u2013 Fiera di Milano, 1983), \u201cReal Space \/ Virtual Space\u201d (Triennale di Milano 1979, 1992), \u201cThe eclectic Home\u201d (Abitare il Tempo, 1990), \u201cBeach Culture\u201d (Centro Culturale Cattolica, 1985\/95). He has transmitted his work through numerous exhibitions in Italy and abroad, and he has curated several exhibitions at the Triennale di Milano, the Venice Biennale, the Mus\u00e9e d\u2019art contemporain de Lyon, the FRAC Centre in Orl\u00e9ans, the International Museum of Ceramics in Faenza, the Fondazione Ragghianti in Lucca, the Fondazione Mudima in Milano and the Museo MA*GA in Gallarate. He has always critically maintained the humanistic, significant and territorial components of design through his works and objects, as well as his work in teaching, theory and publishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1959\/60&nbsp;<\/strong>He began \u201csign research\u201d in painting, aimed at salvaging of the \u201cMinimum symbolic experimentation\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1962&nbsp;<\/strong>With A. Ferrari, E. Sordini, A. Verga and A. Vermi, he founded the Gruppo del Cenobio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1968&nbsp;<\/strong>He designed and created the \u201cAudiovisual Environment\u201d at the XIV Triennale di Milano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1969&nbsp;<\/strong>He won the following prizes for painting: I\u00b0 Premio Termoli, II\u00b0 Premio Joan Mir\u00f3, I\u00b0 Premio Cesare da Sesto. He took part in the IV Week of Painting at the Museum Johanneum in Graz. He created urban intervention for the \u201cCampo Urbano\u201d in Como.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1970&nbsp;<\/strong>He was invited to the experimental exhibition at the XXXV Venice Biennale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1971&nbsp;<\/strong>He designed audiovisual urban tools for Trigon 71 in Graz (Austria).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1972&nbsp;<\/strong>He took part in the \u201cItaly: The New Domestic Landscape\u201d exhibition at MoMA with \u201cLa cellula abitativa;\u201d he developed works for and took part in exhibitions at the \u201cThe new writing\u201d area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1973&nbsp;<\/strong>He was a founding member of Global Tools. He was invited to the XV Triennale and made the film&nbsp;<em>La grande<\/em>&nbsp;<em>occasione<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1973-1975&nbsp;<\/strong>He became artistic director of the Milanese publishing house Jabik &amp; Colophon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1975&nbsp;<\/strong>He won first prize at the Nancy Film Festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1976&nbsp;<\/strong>He took part in the XXXVII Venice Biennale in the \u201cEnvironment as society\u201d section (E. Crispolti).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1978<\/strong>&nbsp;He took part in the XXXVIII Venice Biennale in the following sections: \u201cArtist\u2019s cinema\u201d (V. Fagone), \u201cUtopia, the crisis of the architecture. Radical Architecture\u201d (L.V. Masini).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1979&nbsp;<\/strong>He won the Compasso d\u2019Oro with the project \u201cL\u2019occultamento.\u201d He curated the \u201cReal space \/ Virtual space\u201d exhibition at the Triennale di Milano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1980&nbsp;<\/strong>With Gianfranco Bettetini, he curated the \u201cChronographies, Special project\u201d exhibition at the XXXIX Venice Biennale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1981&nbsp;<\/strong>He co-curated the \u201cScenographic space in the Italian television\u201d exhibition at the XVI Triennale di Milano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1983<\/strong>&nbsp;He curated (with G. Bettetini and A. Grasso) the \u201cThe Telematic Home\u201d exhibition at the Fiera di Milano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1986-1997&nbsp;<\/strong>He became art director of cultural and experimental exhibitions at the \u201cLiving time\u201d event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1992&nbsp;<\/strong>He curated the \u201cLife between things and nature\u201d section at the XVIII Triennale di Milano and created the \u201cMediterranean Landscape\u201d installation at the Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Art Contemporain de Lyon, Quadriennale Internationnale de Design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1997&nbsp;<\/strong>He organised the personal exhibition \u201cFragments,\u201d with objects created in mosaics at the Fortezza da Basso in Florence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2001&nbsp;<\/strong>\u201cMediterranean lands,\u201d a personal exhibition at the Fondazione Ragghianti in Lucca.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2002&nbsp;<\/strong>\u201cThe new territoriality,\u201d at the Rocca Paolina in Perugia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2005<\/strong>&nbsp;All of his films were acquired by the Fondazione Cineteca Italiana which organized an exhibition presented by Vittorio Fagone; Luciano Caramel was the curator of his personal exhibition at the Fondazione Umberto Mastroianni in Arpino (FR) and Frosinone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2007&nbsp;<\/strong>He took part in exhibitions dedicated to the 1970s at the Museo Villa Croce in Genoa (\u201cPublic, actions and ideas in the Seventies in Italy\u201d), at the Triennale di Milano (\u201cSeventies. The long decade of the short century\u201d), and at the Mole Vanvitelliana in Ancona (\u201cObserving the reflected thought\u201d); he created the installations \u201cSicilian itineraries\u201d and \u201cUnity of the Mediterranean sea\u201d at the Museo del Mediterraneo Fondazione Orestiadi in Gibellina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2008&nbsp;<\/strong>He was the subject of a large retrospective at the Fondazione Mudima in Milan, curated by Vittorio Fagone. He participated to the exhibition \u201cInternational Sculpture in Agli\u00e8. Sculpture Nature. Orient Occident\u201d invited by Luciano Caramel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2009&nbsp;<\/strong>FRAC Centre in Orl\u00e9ans dedicated a personal exhibition to his architectural works from the 1960s and 1970s; he realized two exhibitions on his work in ceramics at the Museum in Castellamonte and at MIC in Faenza and, in&nbsp;<strong>2010<\/strong>, at the Museo Hoffmann in Caltagirone; in this year he presented two other exhibition dedicated to his ceramic work in Turin and in Albisola.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2011&nbsp;<\/strong>He took part in a large retrospective at the Galerie Mercier in Paris; he presented the exhibition \u201cLiving the city. Yesterday\u2019s future, for a new territoriality\u201d<em>,<\/em>&nbsp;at the Museo MIAAO, in Turin curated by Enzo Biffi Gentili; he participated in the \u201cFuori! Arte e spazio urbano 1968-1973\u201d exhibition at the Museo del Novecento in Milan, curated by Silvia Bignami and Alessandra Pioselli.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2012&nbsp;<\/strong>He participated in the \u201cGoodbye Seventies<em>\u201d&nbsp;<\/em>exhibition at the Palazzo Reale in Milan, and in the \u201cRadical City\u201d exhibition organised by the Archivio di Stato in Turin. Fondazione Mudima dedicated a personal exhibition to him entitled \u201cLiving in Milan\u201d which collected his works and interventions in the Milan area. He took part in the exhibition \u201cThe Expanded Gaze. Exhibition for Italian artist\u2019s cinema (1912- 2012)\u201d at the Fondazione Rocco Guglielmo in Catanzaro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2013&nbsp;<\/strong>He participated in the \u201cIn the sign of sign. After the Informal Art. The Cenobio Group\u201d exhibition at the Galleria del Credito Valtellinese (Milan) curated by Luciano Caramel, \u201cArtists in space<em>\u201d&nbsp;<\/em>at the Fondazione Rocco Guglielmo in Catanzaro and in \u201cEnvironments and Counter Environments. \u2018Italy: The New Domestic Landscape,\u2019 MoMA, 1972\u201d at the Graham Foundation in Chicago. He presented the personal exhibitions \u201cItineraries\u201d at Ca\u2019 di Fra Gallery in Milan and \u201cTrace. My territories\u201d in Ceramic Museum in Mondov\u00ec.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2014&nbsp;<\/strong>Triennale Design Museum in Milan dedicated a personal exhibition to him entitled \u201cUgo La Pietra. Disequilibrating Design\u201d curated by Angela Rui. He presented the exhibition&nbsp;<em>\u201d<\/em>Inside \/ Outside<em>\u201d&nbsp;<\/em>at the Galleria Antonia Jannone in Milan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2015<\/strong>&nbsp;He presented the personal exhibitions \u201cTextural Structures\u201d at the E3 ARTE  CONTEMPORANEA Gallery in Brescia and he took part at the exhibition \u201cEarthrise\u201d at the PAV in Turin invitated by Marco Scotini.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2016<\/strong>&nbsp;He won the Compasso d\u2019Oro for his Career. He presented the exhibition \u201cLiving is being at home everywhere. Works and researchs in the urban environment 1962-2016\u201d at MA*GA Museum in Gallarate curated by Marco Meneguzzo; he organized the personal exhibition \u201cCinque verdi urbani\u201d at Bianconi Gallery in Milan; he realized an urban installation in ceramic for the city of Montelupo Fiorentino fot the project \u201cMateria Prima\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2017<\/strong>&nbsp;he realized the solo-show: \u201cTerritori\u201d, Galleria Bianconi, Milano; &nbsp;\u201cCampo Tissurato. I segni e l\u2019urbano\u201d, Studio d\u2019Arte Dabbeni, Lugano; He realized two significant&nbsp;installations:&nbsp;\u201cNuovo tempio capitolino\u201d, in the Archeological area of&nbsp;Palatino in&nbsp;Roma, and \u201cAbitare Milano-Analisi e decodifica dello spazio urbano\u201d, in the&nbsp;Fonderia Artistica Battaglia, Milano.
