Christine Liebich

STILL STEEL – solo show

By Ilaria Bignotti

opening 24 may

h.18:00

For the occasion, she brings her most rigorous research to Italy and presents some cycles of work that, right from the names chosen by the artist, well illustrate the complex and fascinating relationship between design, process and result, but also between shape, material and content of this artistic research that combines a strong design and rational tension with a processual and evocative component, generating works of iconic intensity and rigorous beauty.

Window, Maze, Fragment are the main terms that recall Liebich’s creative production and diversify her works: words that take us by the hand, leading us on a journey full of connections and reflections. The labyrinth, the window, the concept of the fragment, are in fact terms at the heart of the entire history of Western art, from the 20th century to the present day, words that Liebich adopts to describe the different compositional and, before that, projectual approach of her work.

Work that elects the metal rod, of steel, dense, heavy, to be composed in different structures and formal patterns, to which the artist arrives with precise and even dangerous operations of assembly and soldering: a muscular work that results, however, in very delicate, apparently also fragile and light, embroideries of monochrome metal that the artist liberates on the walls, making the spectators approach the work and discover its mysterious and seductive textures, its perfect weaves and vibrant apertures, its metallic ups and downs and material tensions.

Behind the final presentation of the work, there is a slow and meticulous process that responds to a carefully studied project, but also to a possibility and processuality of the work, which is composed in its making, thanks to the materials and compositional methods, to the point that in Liebich the idea of a punctilious and ordered rationality and the emphasis on freedom, instinctually, open to possible deviation are perfectly combined.

This is why her works are immediately attractive: they are an exact mirror of life, which seems to develop according to precise rules, but then suddenly surprises us.

Liebich unveils all of this: now she takes us by the hand into one of her labyrinths, now she tells us fragments of a vision, now she asks us to look out of one of her windows.

We follow her, spellbound by her work.
